Biritera takes centerstage on GMA-7 beginning February 6

GMA-7 sets the stage for another original and groundbreaking offering as it launches its newest primetime creation, Biriteraon February 6.  The GMA Telebabad program combines music with drama and tackles the highs and lows in the colorful world of the music industry.

In this new show, lead stars Dennis Trillo and Glaiza de Castro get to showcase not just their acting abilities, but also their talent in singing as they assume the roles of Andrei, the lead vocalist of the band called The Bridge, and Mikaela, a drummer/singer, respectively.

Biritera also proudly introduces GMA-7’s newest child discovery, Roseanne, who plays the role of an aspiring young singer of the same name. As her character embarks on an emotional journey from becoming an amateur singer to a famous biritera, Roseanne discovers many things about her roots, her past and her real identity.

The story takes off from the death of the reigning biritera, which sends Mr. D (Ryan Eigenmann), a respected talent manager, into a frantic search for an immediate replacement.

Upon receiving an invitation to judge in a provincial singing search, Mr. D also brings along Andrei (Dennis Trillo), who then finds himself drawn to one particular contestant, Roseanne (Roseanne Magan). However, Roseanne ends up losing the competition to Barbie (Sweet Ramos), Roseanne’s rival, much to Andrei’s disappoint.

But no one is more disappointed than Roseanne, who wants to succeed as a singer so she can help her adoptive mother Remy (Angelika dela Cruz). Remy, on the other hand, disapproves of her daughter’s dream and would rather see her concentrate on her education.

Unknown to them, Andrei uploads a video of Roseanne taken during the competition. As fate would have it, the video goes viral making Roseanne an instant internet sensation, and attracting talent scouts including Mr. D.

Remy, however, remains adamant in discouraging Roseanne to pursue her dream of becoming a professional singer. But despite how firm she was, Remy finally gives in when Jo (Rich Asuncion), Roseanne’s aunt, turns up after recognizing Roseanne as her sister Carmela’s (Claudine Baretto) daughter. Jo convinces Remy to allow Roseanne to try her luck in the industry making Remy believe that Jo has Roseanne’s best interest at heart.

As Roseanne begins her quest towards becoming a full-fledged biritera, Remy becomes more concerned of her daughter’s welfare as Jo takes over Roseanne’s life. Andrei also shares the same sentiment, as he feels guilty for prodding Mr. D into managing Roseanne, who seems to be taking on too much too soon only to become successful.

How will Roseanne cope with the demands brought about by her newfound career? Will she eventually make it to the top or will she succumb to the pressure before she can even see her dreams come true? How will Andrei and Mikaela figure in this situation? Could there be a deeper connection between Andrei and the biritera Roseanne?

Adding more depth and excitement to the story are Angelika dela Cruz as Remy, Roseanne’s loving adoptive mother; Rich Asuncion as Jo, Roseanne’s manipulative aunt;Ryan Eigenmann as Mr. D, Andrei and Roseanne’s talent manager; Ces Quesada as Simang, Remy’s aunt; Neil Ryan Sese as Eric, a rich businessman; Gwen Zamora as Iris, Andrei’s number one fan who will eventually fall in love with him; Yul Servo as Jo’s boyfriend Jerome; and in a very special role, Ms. Claudine Barretto.

Completing the cast are Kiel Rodriguez as Miko, bass player of the band, The Bridge; Ken Chan as the lead guitarist Popoy; Orlando Sol as the keyboardist Egay; Sweet Ramos as Barbie, Roseanne’s fiercest rival; Protege’s Nomer Limatog, Jr. as Miguelito and Jamaika Olivarez as Kleng Kleng, Roseanne and Barbie’s co-members in the church choir; Kim Komatsu as Gwen, the choir master; Hiro Magalona as Teofi, the organ player at the church; Barbara Miguel as Darling, a child actress managed by Mr. D.; Scarlet as Mrs. Tomandong, Barbie’s mother; Patricia Ysmael as Beverly, and Myra Carel as Bevs, Mr. D’s office staff.

Be inspired by this captivating story about chasing after one’s dreams while not losing sight of the important things in life. This newest GMA Telebabad offering directed by multi-awarded director Mr. Maryo J. delos Reyes is based on an original story by Agnes Gagelonia-Uligan under the creative supervision of creative director Jun Lana, creative head Jake Tordesillas and creative consultant Richard Cruz. Church asks Pacquiao to be 'bible ambassador'

The influential Catholic church in the Philippines said Monday it had asked boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao to follow in the footsteps of NFL hero Tim Tebow and become a "bible ambassador".
Bishop Pablo Virgilio David, who presides over the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines' (CBCP) bible ministry, said church leaders had approached Pacquiao with the idea, but received no feedback from the 32-year-old fighter.
"We asked him to partner with us in promoting the reading of the Bible among Catholics," David told reporters.
"We told him: 'You would be a big help to us brother Manny', but he has not pledged his partnership yet."
He said Pacquiao could follow the example of the Philippine-born National Football League star Tebow, a devout Christian dubbed by some in the press as "God's quarterback."
"Tim Tebow became very popular by promoting the word of God," David said. "Some have referred to Manny Pacquiao as the Tim Tebow of the Philippines."
Tebow, born in Manila in 1987 to a Baptist missionary couple, has emerged as America's hottest football star with his come-from-behind heroics for the Broncos.
Tebow has been very vocal about his Christianity and recently pledged to help fund a $3 million hospital in the southern Philippines.
Pacquiao is regarded as one of the greatest boxers in history, amassing a 54-3 win-loss record with two drawn bouts. He holds a record eight world titles in as many weight divisions.
Pacquiao, who is also a politician and recently elected to the Philippines' lower house of parliament, often cites God as the source of his success, and wears a rosary around his neck before and after his fights.
But the ultra-rich sportsman has not escaped intrigue, and reports of him womanising and gambling have become rich tabloid fodder.
In an interview with Philippine TV station ABS-CBN this month, Pacquiao said he had recently renewed his faith and given up vices following an "encounter with God" during a dream.
In the dream, Pacquiao said he found himself in a forest, where a bright light shone, believed to be God, asking the fighter why he was veering away from Him.
"I woke up crying. I remember I was crying in my dream and when I touched my pillow, it was wet," he said.
"If I had died last year or in the last two years, I'm sure I would have gone straight to hell. My faith in Him was there, 100 percent, but behind it, after prayers, I would still do evil things."
Pacquiao said he now immersed himself in Bible study and spent more time when not in training with wife Jinkee and his four children, according to ABS-CBN.

Oyo talks about fatherhood

“Ang sarap, sarap. Iba yung feeling. Sobrang ibang-iba.”

That’s what Oyo Sotto said during the launch Jan. 20 of TV5’s new soap, “Valiente,” when the media asked him about how it was to be a new dad.

Oyo’s wife, actress Kristine Hermosa, gave birth to their first child, Ondrea Bliss, last December.

He seemed surprised to discover that “talagang iniisip mo na yung asawa mo, yung anak mo.”

Oyo narrated, “Kung ano gagawin mo bukas, ano ipapakain mo sa kanila, saan mo sila ipag-aaral—ang dami mong iniiisip talaga.”

While Oyo said he does his share in taking care of their baby daughter, he gives props to his wife.

On Kristine:
“Si Tin kasi, exclusively breastfeeding talaga. I give all the credit to Kristine talaga. Kasi minsan, hindi ako nagigising e. Siya talaga yung nagpapagod.”

As for adjustments he had to make as a father, Oyo shared this example: “Kung nung dati, late akong gumigising, okay lang. Tapos any time gusto kong lumabas, okay lang, walang problema. Ngayon hindi na, e. Ngayon kailangang itanong muna kung pwedeng lumabas.”

Does his wife have plans to return to showbiz?

“Gusto nya talagang bumalik,” Oyo said. “Napag-usapan naman namin bago pa kami ikasal na kung sakaling may anak na kami, kung gusto niyang bumalik okay lang.”

He says that they are considering having another child in two in two to three years.

On dad Vic: ‘We don’t talk about issues’

In previous interviews with the press, Oyo has said that he does not approve of his father Vic Sotto and “Eat Bulaga” co-host Pauleen Luna’s rumored relationship.

Has Vic talked to him about this issue?

“Kami ni Daddy, hindi namin pinag-uusapan. Wala naman sa amin y’un. Siyempre, marami talagang issue kung marami pero sa pag sa loob ng family, hindi na namin pinag-uusapan,” he explained.

Oyo revealed that Vic has yet to introduce Pauleen as his girlfriend. Neither has he tried to confirm if the rumors are true.

“Pag may mga issue kay Daddy, ayaw talaga naming mangialam sa kanya. Gan’un din naman si Daddy sa amin. Never naman siya nangialam,” he explained. “Ako basta, si Daddy, kung masaya siya, alam na niya yun. Malaki na siya.”

‘Grudging’ acceptance of Pauleen?

Would he accept Pauleen if his dad confirms their relationship?

“Kailangan natin tanggapin. Kasi ang puno’t dulo pa rin niyan, tatay ko pa rin siya. Hindi ko matatanggal na maging tatay siya,” Oyo said.

The 28-year-old actor added, “Sa akin, sa tingin ko, hindi naman sa edad, pero kung mapapakisamahan mo naman yung tao, kung kaya mong tanggapin yung tao, okay lang.”

What should a girlfriend of his father do to gain his approval?

“Valiente” will premiere February 13 on TV5.

Julia Montes admits she gets 'kilig' when doing scenes with Coco Martin

by: Rhea Manila Santos

With her career on the rise, teen queen Julia Montes admitted she has a lot to be happy about. Aside from being chosen as one of Coca-Cola’s Happiness Ambassadors, she is also Coco Martin’s leading lady in the Primetime Bida series Walang Hanggan.

The 16 year-old said she is not fazed by those who have negative reactions about her being cast opposite Coco despite their age gap. Kami si Katerina at Daniel so sana yun yung makita nila at ma-feel nila sa show na ito,” she shared during the Coca-Cola Youth Blow Out event held last January 28 at the Trinoma activity center in Quezon City.

The Fil-German actress is thankful by the support Walang Hanggan is getting from her fans who have been following her since her Mara Clara days. “Siyempre sobrang saya ko na maganda ang feedback kasi nung umpisa talagang maraming negative akong natatanggap na hindi daw kami bagay dahil sa age gap. Pero at least nung first week lumabas na okay naman, may chemistry naman daw. So sana tumuloy tuloy kasi marami pa talagang dapat abangan,” she said.

Julia said that instead of getting disheartened, she is taking a more positive outlook from all the comments people have about her new series. “Oo siyempre parang yun yung naging motivation ko na talagang pagbutihin yung character and talaga namang kaabang-abang yung character ko dito kasi iba talaga kay Clara and sa previous kong nagawa,” she explained.

The pretty mestiza said she and Coco are now more at ease working with each other as their taping days go by. “Sa simula pa lang okay na ako sa kanya kasi nga magka-work na kami. Konti lang siguro nung mga first three days medyo kapaan pa pero sa susunod na days talagang wala na, kami na yung nag-gi-give and take. May kanya-kanya na kaming ideas na shini-share sa isa’t isa,” she revealed.

Julia added that it’s hard not to get kilig while doing scenes with her newest leading man. “Meron in a way na parang pag ginagawa namin yung eksena, ma-fi-feel mo yung eksena na talagang nakakakilig.”

Now that she is getting used to having a more mature leading man, Julia said she would also be open to be paired with older actors in the future as long as her role calls for it. “Hindi ko rin masasabi pero kung ano yung makakabuti sa career ko and mas maganda yung role, kung bagay man sa role gagawin ko. Willing naman ako kasi wala naman sa age yun,” she said.

Now that she is celebrating her eighth year in the industry, Julia said she feels blessed to have been chosen to be part of major projects like Mara Clara and Walang Hanggan. “Siyempre ang saya-saya ko kasi ang dami-dami nga naming magkaka-batch and nabigyan ako ng pagkakataon dito. And sana tuloy-tuloy pa kasi talagang ginagawa ko yung best ko every day and in every opportunity na binibigay,”
